Hachirogata, is a salt-water lake known for the legend of Hachirotaro. However, the lake was drained by the government, at immense cost, to one fifth of its original size to increase food production after the war. Local residents have struggled to revive the lake which suffers from annual breakouts of algae and water pollution.
