As a student at Nihon University, he founded the drama troupe, “Tokyo Sunshine Boys”. From here, he launched himself as a writer for stage, TV and the movies. His first foray as a director, Welcome back, Mr. McDonald was both a domestic hit and lauded at the Berlin Film Festival. His third film, Suite Dreams was a massive hit seen by nearly five million people and secured his reputation as Japan's leading writer-director.
