Q: How do you feel about participating in TIFF? I understand that you have participated in this years TIFF as a juror.
 
Koji Fukada: It was the first time for me to participate in TIFF as a juror. I am still young and just turned 30. I felt truly humbled and wondered whether I deserved to be a juror.
 
Q: Was it difficult to judge the film?
 
Koji Fukada: It was more fun than difficult.
 
Q: I understand that the Asian section had numerous film entries?
 
Koji Fukada: 19 films within in 6 days is a demanding number of films to watch, even compared to the other sections of TIFF. I watched with the pace of 4 films per day and found the Trespassers which won the prize to be extremely interesting. I hoped that this film will be released in Japan by taking the advantage of this opportunity. That is because Asian films, including the Filipino films, rarely get a chance to be shown in Japan.
 
Q: We made the TIFF slogan for this year as “Believe the Power of Film”. Do you have any specific episode for feeling the power of the film?
 
Koji Fukada: Rather than a power itself, I think it is an act of referring to the distinct values through the experience of watching film. The thought is different compared to how I appreciated the film as a film geek when I was young, but it is how big of an influence the film had on oneself. I think that the global values have turned in to an absolute shambles since the year 2000 and to be in touch with the distinct cultural values is an issue of global importance.
